Natalie’s Quilt

Ginger Hut Quilts
Finished size 62 x 62
Overview:
This quilt is comprised of 16 individual blocks arranged in an 4 block by 4 block pattern. The blocks are a traditional jacob's ladder block. I used mini charm squares for the four patches saving me tons of cutting time. Each block is comprised of 5 - 4 patch squares and 4 - half square triangles.
Fabric Requirements:
- 10 Mini Charm Packages plus 8 - 2 ½ squares
- 1 ½ yards white fabric for triangles and borders
- 1 ½ yards gray fabric for triangles and binding
- 4 yards for backing
Cutting:
- From the white fabric, cut (8) 10 inch squares
- From the gray fabric, cut (8) 10 inch squares
Construction:
Piecing the half square triangle blocks: Take all 8 white squares and draw a line diagonally to make a x from corner to corner. Put the gray and white squares right sides together and sew
¼ “ seam on both sides of each drawn line.
Cut all 8 set in half and half again, ending up with (4) five inch square blocks.
Then cut diagonally along your drawn line, you will now have 8 pieces from each set totalling 64 half square triangles. Iron with seams toward the gray. Trim each unit to 4 ½ “, taking care to keep the seam centered on the diagonal line.
Piecing the 4 patch blocks: Most mini charm packs have two colorways, the mini charm packs I used had a green/yellow and a pink/orange. Separate the two colorways, set neutral ones aside to fill in here and there. Taking 160 pieces of each colorway. For each colorway, sew 2 mini charm blocks together to make 80 units and sew two unit together to make 40 units in each color way.
Piecing the blocks: For each block you will need (4) half square triangles and 5 four patches (3 of one colorway and 2 of the other).
Quilt Assembly: Once all 16 blocks are stitched and ready to go, it is time to put them together. If you have a design wall I recommend putting your blocks on that or lay it out on the floor 4 rows of 4 blocks. Arrange it until you are happy with how it looks. I always take a picture before I sew my quilts together, you would not believe how many mistakes I have found by doing this.
Stitch rows together pinning at intersections. Press.
Adding borders: Add a 2 ½” white border around all 4 sides. Make two sprips with 26 mini charm squares sewn together and two strips with 28 mini charm squares. Add the smaller strip to opposite sides, press add larger strips to the other sides. Add 2 ½” white border around all 4 sides.
Finishing: Baste, quilt and add binding and label.
